Before we can begin to understand the how Software as a Service (SaaS) is challenging the vendors of traditional customer provided equipment (or "Customer Premise Equipment", abbreviated as "CPE"), we must first understand SaaS.
Many will use the terms "Application Service Provider (ASP)", "Hosted", "Cloud", or "Managed Service" as synoyms to SaaS. The differences between them may be subtle, but they're very important if we are to truly understand why SaaS is gaining ground against the established players in the industry.
