Cisco Extends Corporate Network to the Home for Teleworkers

Cisco, the global leader in networking, has announced its new wireless system that extends network capabilities to home workers without comprising security and controls. This new system, OfficeExtend, was launched in March 2011, focuses on wireless technology, including hardware and software.

The Cisco OfficeExtend system includes the Cisco Aironet 600 Series Office Extend Access Points, wireless controllers and control system. It offers voice and video capabilities to make media communications more accessible. OfficeExtend uses an 802.1n dual-band design to manage traffic and improve performance. Private access can be directed to the Internet and not corporate controllers. Other features of this system include Ethernet ports for IP phones, printers and other equipment to support mobile and home offices.

Supporting up to 500 corporate and home access points, the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Wireless Service Module is part of the OfficeExtend system, focusing on scalability to accommodate mobile equipment running rich media content. This module includes interference management and Cisco VideoStream technology to improve wireless multicast video.

A couple of options are available for the smaller network: Cisco 2500 Series Wireless Controllers and the software for Cisco ISR G2 Services-Ready Engine, allowing for up to 50 access points and 500 clients. Controller functionality can be deployed physically with the wireless controller, or online by downloading the software to the ISR G2 engine. This setup includes VideoStream, ClientLink and CleanAir technology.
