Networking Equipment

Routers, Switches, Firewalls, Gateways, Servers and more

Updated: April 14, 2022

The basic building blocks of a corporate network – excluding wiring, cabling or the wireless infrastructure - are:

  • Routers
  • Switches
  • Firewall/Gateway
  • Servers

These connect the client systems (whether local for employees or remote for customers) and the servers that handle the computational, storage and transactional tasks. There are other more specialized devices that can also serve as part of the network infrastructure but these are the most common.

You will need to carefully determine the scale and scope of your system needs and your resulting equipment requirements will follow from those – whether you are building a small office LAN or a global Wide Area Network (WAN).
