Cisco Routers to be Updated

Updated: December 04, 2009

Having sold over seven million routers since 2004, Cisco announced today that it is to release three new integrated services router models.

The Cisco ISR G2 router series will be aimed at the small and medium-sized business market and branch offices of larger companies, in direct response to cheaper competitors.

Cisco was built on the back of network routers and commands about 80% of the router market, so it's about time to update the current models.

It has been five years since Cisco last updated their router products and 3com amongst others are offering credible routers at the same price but apparently with twice the performance levels.

The new generation of cisco routers will be faster and will include new video digital signal processors that are optimised for greater data requirements such as scalable audio-conferencing, surveillance, collaboration, digital signage and optimised video streaming. They will also have better power efficiency through switch modules running EnergyWise software.

Recent articles on Hardware.com news section have been reporting on Cisco's recent acquisitions; including Starent Networks - mobile networks' infrastructure experts and Tandberg a video conferencing hardware producer. These are moves away from Cisco's core market and towards a unified network solutions environment.
