Cisco® Carrier Ethernet System Announced

On August 15, 2011, Consolidated Communications officially deployed the Cisco(R) Carrier Ethernet System to customers living in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Texas. The network is a pre-tested solution that greatly lessens the amount of time and resources necessary to validate performance levels.

The new network utilizes Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Service Routers for scalability and efficient video distribution. It also uses Active Network Abstraction (a powerful multi-technology network management system) to improve operational efficiency and automate various support systems.

The Cisco Carrier Ethernet System will also allow current IPv4 customers to quickly switch over to IPv6. This deployment has grown more popular among residential and business customers and should help to meet the demand for unique IP addresses as well as provide a high level of end-to-end security.

Tom White, the vice president of engineering and network operations at Consolidated Communications, released a public statement about the changes. He stated that “The Cisco ASR 9000 Series and Cisco Carrier Ethernet System position us to address the short-term needs of bandwidth consumption through a simplified efficient network core with a clear path to accommodate the technical and bandwidth needs of the future.”

Consolidated Communications is a major independent telephone company within the region and provides a wide range of services to the public. They offer long distance phone calls, high speed Internet access, digital television, and digital phone.
