The traditional telephony concept of trunking has been carried across to VoIP, so that your VoIP provider can set you up with a cost-effective connection to the telephone network to carry all your company’s voice and data traffic.
In the original telephone networks, going as far back as the 1890s, each telephone call was carried over its own separate copper wire pair. This arrangement was expensive to install and operate, and was later replaced trunking, that is, the sharing of multiple calls over a single cable circuit.
For most people, your phone sits idle much of the time. When you made a call, your local central office would determine if there was an idle trunk circuit and assign it to your call session. Multiple simultaneous sessions could be carried over a single trunk via techniques like time division multiplexing (TDM). There would be a limit to the number of sessions can carry, so for larger companies with more employees there was a need to over-provision the network by setting up sufficient trunks to minimise the time you had to wait for a circuit to become free.
